For the past 6 years, HOPES had been arranging a fun-filled charity carnival, which had always turned out to be a phenomenal success. However, last year we decided to do things a little differently and organized the first ever HOPES Health Expo 16, which went on to become a bigger success than anyone could have ever imagined. Encouraged by its favorable outcome, we arranged yet another Health Expo on the 24th of January 2017, even more thrilling and exhilarating than the previous one. On 30th and 31st of December, 2017 HOPES held its first 2 day event.
The third edition of HOPES Health Expo was organized at Expo center Karachi by the students of Karachi Medical and Dental College and was attended by around 25,000 people from all over the city. The event offered free consultation and awareness sessions on 20+ medical and dental specialties by trained volunteers from renowned institutes. Over 20 types of free screenings were offered in collaboration with some of Pakistan’s notable institutes such as Ankleseria Hospital, Kazim Trust, Canada Medical Group Pakistan, Help International Welfare Trust etc. A First Aid Training workshop was organized in collaboration with Pakistan Red Crescent Society on both days of the expo along with a workshop on Root Canal Treatment by Dr. Fahad Umer from AKU on the second day. Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation DUHS, and the Psychiatry clinical stall won the best stall awards in their respective categories for being the most informative and audience engaging stalls over all.
There were fun games and activities for every age group. Towards the end of the second day, Hashmani’s Hospital awarded 2 free LASIK treatments to the expo participants via Lucky Draw whereas Polani Travels offered 3 free return tickets to Dubai.
The event was attended by Transportation and Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, Senator Haseeb Ullah, Dr. Farooq Sattar, celebrity entertainer Ali Gul Pir, journalist Mazhar Abbas, sports journalist Danish Anis, actress Nimra Khan and social media celebrities Karachi Vynz. The guests recognized and appreciated the efforts of HOPES and pledged to help and carry the mission of making healthcare free and accessible for all.
The 2nd HOPES Health Expo took place in the January of 2017. It had events of engrossment for every age group. A lot of hard work was put in by over eight hundred volunteers for over four months before the event and with the Expo being attended by more than 15,000 people, the event lived up to expectations, and the efforts of the HOPES’s team were not in vain. Entering the event, one could see hordes of people at every stall. There were more than 20 clinical stalls with topics including Pediatrics, Cardiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Rheumatology, Oncology, Hypertension, ENT, Diabetes etc. Each stall had the provision of a free examination and screenings which included Random Blood Sugar, CBC, Thalassemia and Hepatitis B & C Screenings, Spirometry, Bone Mass density and Blood grouping.
Volunteers at the stall were providing valuable information addressing a variety of health issues on endemics like dengue, malaria, bird flu and polio. All of these facilities and knowledge were given free of cost. Apart from clinical stalls other organizations namely PHH, PWA etc had put up their stalls to guide people about their services to humanity. Pharmaceutical companies such as BOSCH and Getz Pharma were also seen telling people about their work. But this wasn’t all that the event had to offer, there was also a Photo booth, Games’ stall and a food court which was filled up to the brim for all the twelve hours that the event lasted. There were also skits on social issues such as women’s rights.
Apart from the stalls, there were numerous seminars by some of the best medical practitioners in town. The first session of the day was regarding First Aid and Basic Life Support, in collaboration with the Pakistan Red Crescent Society. Dr. Zahid Azam delivered a lecture on Chronic Liver diseases followed by Mir Muhammad Ali Khan’s motivational session. The HOPES Health Expo was covered by renowned media networks such as News One and GEO. Some very famous personalities who attended the expo as chief guests included the Health Minister (Dr. Sikander), Senator Haseeb Khan, Dr. Arshad Vohra, Mr. Younis Bashir, Prof Saleemullah, Mr. Asif Haider Shah, Mr. Ayaz Khan, Dr. Nargis Anjum (the Principal of KMDC) and actress/model Nimra Khan.
On the 24th of January 2016, history was created when the volunteers of HOPES organized the first ever HOPES Health Expo; the first such event in Pakistan organized by a student-run NGO. These volunteers were all medical students with little or zero knowledge of putting together an event on such a huge scale, but they had a vision which drove them to work hard and do their best to turn it into a reality. After months of hardwork, the event turned out to be a success, with over 9000 people in attendance.
The expo included free check-ups and screenings for various diseases such as Hepatitis, Sugar, CBC etc. Clinics of various departments providing awareness, seminars by some of the renowned professors and life coaches. A large number of NGOs from Karachi also put up stalls informing the public about their working.
